About Earth Stone Guide

Earth Stone Guide is a reference guide to birthstones by month — what each stone is, what its color means, where it is mined, how it is cut, and the traditions attached to it. Every month has its own page so you can read one stone at a time instead of scrolling a chart.

How the information is sourced

Mineral names, hardness values, crystal systems and mining locations follow standard gemological references. The month-by-month list follows the standardized list published by the American National Association of Jewelers in 1912, together with its later additions — alexandrite for June, citrine for November, tanzanite for December in 2002, and spinel for August in 2016. Where a month has more than one accepted stone, we say so on the page. Historical background is set out in full in the history of birthstones.

Traditional lore versus fact

Spiritual meanings and healing associations are recorded because they are part of the cultural history of these stones. They are traditional lore, not medical advice, and we label them as such wherever they appear.

Who it's for

Anyone buying a birthstone gift, choosing a stone for themselves, or simply curious about which gem belongs to their month. If you're shopping, the birthstone jewelry guide covers settings, metals and what to look for.
